SoFo (Södermalm)

SoFo (South of Folkungagatan) is Stockholm's most characterful neighbourhood — a hilly district on the northern edge of Södermalm where independent shops, vintage stores, specialty coffee roasters, and the kind of neighbourhood restaurants that Stockholmers actually eat at have created a local scene that is the antithesis of the tourist-oriented Gamla Stan.

Nytorgsgatan, the neighbourhood's main street, concentrates the food scene — from morning fika (the Swedish coffee-and-pastry ritual that is less a break and more a social institution) at Johan & Nyström (one of Stockholm's pioneer specialty coffee roasters) through lunch at Nytorget Urban Deli to evening cocktails at the bars that line the square. The vintage and design shops along Bondegatan and Skånegatan sell the kind of curated secondhand clothing, Scandinavian design objects, and independent fashion that Södermalm's creative residents demand.

Södermalm as a whole is Stockholm's largest and most diverse island-neighbourhood — home to the city's creative class, its LGBTQ+ community, and the immigrant populations whose restaurants (Ethiopian, Turkish, Thai, Japanese) give the area a culinary diversity that the rest of Stockholm's relatively homogeneous dining scene can't match. The views from Södermalm's northern cliffs — looking across the water to Gamla Stan and the city centre — are among the finest in Stockholm, and the combination of elevated viewpoints, neighbourhood culture, and the general Söder attitude (relaxed, creative, slightly countercultural) makes it the most rewarding area for walking in the city.
